Position Objective The Engineer Acoustic III provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems in underwater acoustics. Primary Responsibilities Design Design underwater hydrophones and/or active and passive transducers utilizing cylindrical ceramics, flexural disks, cantilever beams, and geophones. Support designs with analysis, simulations and calculations including space, MATLAB and FEA. Prepare drawings/documentation for work as required for engineering and manufacturing of products. Assist engineering with design modification of acoustic subsystems and systems for development. Evaluate materials and systems, identify equipment, or prepare work instructions for manufacturing. Build Design, model, simulate, and test complex acoustic transducers. Realize transducer designs by building or directing the build of prototype units for testing, verification and qualification. Resolve product process and system issues; provide recommendation for enhancements and cost reductions; initiate Engineering Change Notices; and formulate cost impacts. Test & Integration Conduct complex in-house tests, direct and guide or mentor other Engineers. Develop test plans and procedures for testing events. Apply risk, failure analysis, and root cause analysis as required within the engineering discipline. Procedural Keep accurate and complete records of engineering activities. Provide training and/or direction to junior engineers, technicians or manufacturing operators. Keep accurate and complete records of engineering activities. Provide communications and/or presentations to customers, suppliers or vendors. Travel and participation in product field tests. Use Sparton policies and procedures to complete work assignments. All other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience 4-year degree from an accredited university in Acoustics, Sonar, Ultrasonic or related field OR a combination of education and relevant experience. A minimum of 5 years of experience with simulation and computational programs (e.g. MatLab, MathCad). Experience with transducer potting materials such as epoxies and urethanes. Experience in generating design documentation and technical reports. Required Qualifications Must be willing/able to obtain a DoD security clearance. Must have a strong theoretical background and experience with applied hands-on implementation expertise in electronic design, simulation, modeling, analysis, and test. Design experience with underwater hydrophones and/or active and passive transducers utilizing cylindrical ceramics, flexural disks, cantilever beams, and geophones. Proficiency with finite element modeling/analysis experience with COMSOL, ANSYS and/or PZFlex. Familiarity with Piezoelectric materials and associated applications. Hands-on experience with development, building and testing of acoustic transducer assemblies and systems. Ability to draw solutions from both formal training and experience and use original thinking and ingenuity. Ability and willingness to contribute and participate in presentations. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including:
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams). Should show high initiative, be self-motivated and have ability to act independently on technical matters. Pluses Knowledge of shock and vibration testing, designing for shock and vibration, experience with flow noise. Experience with analog and digital interfacing, amplifiers, microcontrollers, digital signal processing. Knowledge of time and frequency domain filtering, sampling theorem and aliasing and communication protocols. Supervisory Responsibilities None. Salary Range:
$80K -- $100K
